Questioning Sex #6: Is the "Inner Fire" of Sex Humanity's Promethean Dilemma?

Sex presented humanity with an evolutionary gift but also posed an existential dilemma.

The media frenzy surrounding the new movie Oppenheimer — about the development of the atomic bomb — got me thinking about the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus. By stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans, Prometheus provided humanity with a technological leap that was the key to civilization.

But the myth is a cautionary tale. Prometheus paid a terrible price, and humanity faced an existential dilemma since fire creates but also destroys and can be a blessing or a curse.

The Promethean dilemma of fire applies to the “inner fire” of human sexuality.
